Spanish Language & Liberal Arts

Granada, Spain
Spanish Language & Liberal Arts

About the Program

Improve your spoken and written Spanish while delving into intriguing subjects like art, economics, history, literature, media, music, political science, sociology, and more. During Semester and Academic year terms, elective course options increase in proportion to your language level. At the beginning to intermediate level, elective courses are all taught in English, while at the high-intermediate level and above, elective courses are all taught in Spanish. Summer courses are designed for students at all levels of Spanish. You'll enjoy choosing from a robust set of courses, taught in English and Spanish that build upon all that Granada has to offer, from history to art to culture. In addition, you can complete a ACTFL Official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) at the CEA CAPA office to prove your language ability, whether it be for future employers or to become a foreign language teacher.

Program Structure & Courses

Choose a 4-week-session in June, July, or combine both. During each session, you may either enroll in up to 4 electives, or take 2 electives and 1 Spanish language course. Electives meet for 23-45 contact hours/1-3 credits. Language courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. You may earn 5-6 credits (up to 90 contact hours) per session; if you combine sessions, you may earn 10-12 credits (up to 180 contact hours).

Language and elective courses meet daily, Monday through Friday.

Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses. You'll take a language placement exam after you arrive in Granada. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
